Tatars and Bashkirs living in Latvia took part in the cleanup of two Muslim cemeteries (“Mikel” and “Yaunziems”) located in the city of Riga.
Cemetery "Mikel" has been operating for about 100 years, according to "Tatar-Inform". In 1988, the Latvian Tatar- Bashkir cultural community "Chishma " contracted to service the Muslim cemetery "Mikel". Under this contract the community has taken the responsibility to keep the cleanness of the cemetery and to conduct burial ceremonies according to the Sharia.
In 1989, the City Council has allocated land for Muslim cemetery in Yaunziems area. Here in 1991 was held for the first time Eid al-Adha and the revival of Islam in Latvia, according to community activist Ramil Kadyrov.
